Red and white cats rekindle fan base
The Canyon Cougars basketball squad haven't actually had a solid team in many years. They were trying to fill key positions, especially finding a stellar postman that can ignite the hoops.
Their prayer has finally been answered.
Only sophomore this season and burning holes in the baskets, Austin New may be the greatest asset to the Cougars that any coach has seen in years.
"Austin is a phenomenal player. He's learning quickly and is making some big plays for us," Canyon head baskball coach Kenny Rotzler remarked.
With New on the "reborn Cougar team," the red and white cats are now 12-1 on the season. A mark that is unreal among many of the avid Cougar fans.
The Cougars latest victim was helpless Fredericksburg, 65-38, as New crashed the nets for 26 hoops, 10 blocks and 14 rebounds.
Rotzler is also thrilled about the key leadership by another vital player, sophomore Isaiah Jackson, who has shown quality movement under the basket the last five games.
"We need to focus on one game at a time," Rotzler concluded. "We still have several key non-district games left before we head into district play on Jan. 14."
