Ranger soccer fares well over foes

Last year at this time, the Smithson Valley Rangers' girls' soccer team stood undefeated, 7-0 in district.
Today they are all smiles with the same record; teammates Marcie Morales and Dana Mecke are making the headlines.
Over the weekend head coach Jason Adkins and crew headed to the Hays Consolidated soccer tourney with all the cards on the table. When the final whistle had sounded Saturday evening, the Rangers headed home with first place honors by besting host Hays, 1-0.
Again the honors went to Morales and Mecke for kicking the locals to three consecutive victories. The Rangers bested Vista Ridge 3-1, Alamo Heights 1-0, and Hays 1-0.
In the Alamo Heights encounter, Morales tallied both goals. In the Vista Ridge game, Morales, Mecke and Jonie Canfield scored a goal each. Mecke canned the winning goal in minute 56 against Hays in the championship round.
"The girls played real hard here today," Adkins said. "They played excellent defense and offense, and I'm real proud of Dana and Marcie for the outstanding job they did in the tournament."
Next up for the Rangers is the Georgetown tourney this weekend. The Ranger boys take part in their own tourney this weekend, too.
A good, wholesome offense and defense proved all it took for the Smithson Valley boys' soccer team to overhaul the Fredericksburg Billies 1-0 to stay undefeated.
"I thought that we played pretty well," head coach Russ Girard said. "This had to be the best competition that we have played so far and also considering that we have had key injuries the past weeks."
Matt Carpenter, assisted by Andrew Sendejo, punched across the winning goal for the Rangers in minute 65.
