Fire destroys home by Potter's Creek

Canyon Lake Fire/EMS responded to a fire by Potter's Creek Park on the northside of Canyon Lake last Thursday about 4:40 p.m.

According to Deputy Fire Marshal Wayne Ellington, the structure was about 60 percent engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on the scene.

Firefighters battled blaze into the evening, but the home could not be saved. Ellington valued the loss at $180,000.

On Saturday, Ellington went back to the fire scene with a K-9 unit to investigate the fire. The K-9 unit did have a positive alert and a sample was sent to Austin for investigation. However, Ellington stressed that he did not feel the fire was intentionally set, but had to follow protocol as a security measure.

As far as Ellington could ascertain, the fire began at the rear of the residence on the north end of the house and spread through the entire house.

No one was at the residence when the fire began and a neighbor made the 911 call. The owner, Carlos Rivera of San Antonio, did arrive at the scene during the fire battle and could only watch helplessly.

Rivera said he bought the home last May and began remodeling it about a month ago. He had moved in some furniture, but for the most part, he said the house was unfurnished.
