The Smithson Valley Rangers amassed a quick 26-0 halftime lead Friday evening and utilized the awesome "air-tactics" of signal-caller Zach Bailey to soundly defeat SA Reagan 34-13 in a crucial 26-5A pigskin encounter.
Bailey had 123 yards passing and continues to strive to improve in each and every encounter. He found his receivers and got ample help from his defensive line.
Statistic-wise, both the Rangers and the Rattlers played pretty well on even terms, however the most vital spread was in total yards where the Rangers contributed 316 yards. Smithson Valley had 193 yards rushing most which was the fine contribution of running back David Gutierrez who ran for 100 yards.
With 5:03 left in the first stanza, the Rangers dented the scoreboard first ... Gutierrez bulled-over on a 20-yard scamper and David Sweet hit the uprights.
The Rangers continued to increase their lead in the second quarter, when Bailey found Jason Constanzo on a nine-yard pass. Sweet connected and 14-0 was flashing.
With 6:46 left in the initial frame, Cody Beyer got into the act as he snatched a pass from Bailey on nine-yards and finally Bailey made it 26-0 at the- half with another 33-yarder to Beyer.
At 4:15 still clicking on the clock, Gutierrez rambled over on a three-yarder from Bailey and #bailey passed to Reagan Moczygemba for the two-point conversion.
The Rangers, who are now 3-1 in conference play, now play SA Lee this Friday. Lee lost 42-15 to number two Madison which sets up this Fridays showdown with arch-rival Judson for a possible conference crown. SV must still play Madison and right now Coach Larry Hill and crew can only hope Madison beats Judson and SV can defeat Madison for a showdown.
Coach Hill wasted little time in saying that, "We were extremely pleased with our team and the tremendous effort the kids put into winning this game for us."
"We just will take one game at a time and we are really looking forward to this Friday's game against Lee ... they always have a good team and they are real big and strong both on offense and defense, "Hill stated.
"Our defense really came through for us ... they made some excellent blocks which gave our offense a real big break," Zach Bailey stressed.
