Mt. Valley School hosts Bike Rodeo

Just call us "flexible". Under the unflappable guidance of David Ricker, director of Communities in Schools at Mountain Valley Elementary School, the Pilot Club of Canyon Lake sponsored the sixth annual Bicycle Rodeo on October 27, 2004, despite a sudden rainstorm which occurred in the middle of the event.
Quickly moving from the outside area in to the gym, fourteen Pilot Club members judged the four events, tallied the scores, and presented safety helmets to the thirty winners. All of the 150 plus students who participated received a congratulatory personalized certificate.
The joy which the Pilot members experience by sponsoring this project comes from the delight the students exhibit and staunch support of administrators, teachers, and fellow students who cheer their classmates as they compete. This underscores the significance of this project which encourages bicycle safety and projects the importance of preventing traumatic brain injuries, a primary focus of Pilot International.
Special thanks go to Pilots Micki Authier, Susan Bogle, Elizabeth Bowman, Anna Paula Casey, Jo Conchado, Dee Danford, Irma Feibelman, Marilyn Gound, Jeanne Helm, Donna Holmes, Virginia Jacobson, Betty Johnson, Lois Ricci, and Betty Smith who scored the events with typical (though somewhat "soggy") enthusiasm. Of course, we could not engage in this project without the fund raising efforts of all the Pilot Club members, the support of Griff's Cycle Shop for providing us with reasonably priced helmets, and Comal County Sheriff s Office for performing the safety check of each participant's equipment.
We also especially appreciate all of the parents who made an extra effort to bring their children's bikes to school so that they could be involved. Many parents scurried through the rain helping to move bikes and stayed to cheer the students. Fun things happen when we all work together as a community. That is one of the commitments of the Pilot Club of Canyon Lake.
