Three apply for vacant school board seat

The Comal Independent School District has announced three applicants to date for the District 3 seat vacated by school board president Nick Nichols in September.

Those filing applications are: Frank Baker, a real estate appraiser, Bob Slupik, a math teacher at New Braunfels High School; and Mark A. Smith, an insurance agent/producer for Barnard Donegan Insurance in New Braunfels.

Nichols resigned from the school board on Sept. 30 citing personal health issues. He had been president of the board since May and served as secretary of the board for three years before that. He was first elected to the board in 1999 and his current term expires in May.

Eligible voters had until Monday, Nov. 8 at 5 p.m. to apply for the vacant school board position. A letter of interest, resume, and one-page application must have been submitted by that time to Jeanie Mendez in the Comal ISD's central office.

Eligible applicants will be interviewed by the school board at the regular meeting of the board on Thursday, Nov. 18, at 6 p.m., at Bill Brown Elementary School. The board plans to make the appointment that night.

To be eligible for the vacant District 3 seat, the applicants must live within District 3's single-member district boundaries; have been a resident of Texas for at least one year and a resident of the school district for at least six months; be a United States citizen; be a registered voter; and, be at least 18 years of age.

The regular election to fill the District 3 seat for another three-year term will be held on May 7, 2005. For more information call 830-221-2064.
