County's burn ban will continue indefinitely
by Kevin Force, Editor Comal County commissioners voted unanimously last Thursday to keep a total burn ban in effect indefinitely, which includes all fireworks and other combustibles. The ban, which was put into place by Commissioner Jan Kennady on Dec. 30, 2005, will remain in effect until either Gov. Rick Perry lifts the disaster declaration that permits such a law or County Judge Danny Scheel chooses to end it. People in the fireworks industry have been publically unhappy with the ban and tried to have it overruled in district court. The court ruled to uphold the ban. "We certainly don't want to affect anybody's livelihood," Scheel said. "However, it is also our responsibility to preserve the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Comal County and their property, and that is what we're attempting to do." Violations of the ban are subject to a fine of up to $500.
