Blistering Winter: Wildfires continue to ignite 'Tinderbox' Texas

A brush fire in north Bexar County burned nearly 150 acres and required the efforts of firefighters from at least 17 different departments and helicopters from the Texas Forestry Department to contain it on Thursday afternoon.

County's burn ban will continue indefinitely

Comal County commissioners voted unanimously last Thursday to keep a total burn ban in effect indefinitely, which includes all fireworks and other combustibles.

Students failing in science proficiency

The state of Texas received an "F" in science instruction in the Thomas B. Fordham Institute's 2005 State of State Science Standards, published last month. The report said that almost half the states are not setting high enough academic standards for science in public schools.

Texas National Guard aids firefighters

Texas National Guard helicopters were called in to assist in the wildfire that erupted in north Bexar County on Thursday.

County saving by charging developers plat application fees

Texas State Legislature House Bill 2931 enabling counties to impose an application fee to cover the cost of the county's review of a subdivision plat and inspection of street, road, and drainage improvements described by the plat has saved Comal County taxpayers nearly $322,000 in the last two years.
