by Crystal Gottfried, Staff Writer
A 19-year elementary school veteran and a former businessman turned teacher have been named Comal Independent School District's teachers of the year.
Cindy Slye, a third-grade teacher at Rebecca Creek Elementary, is the Elementary Teacher of the Year.
George Grams, a science and special education teacher at Comal Leadership Institute/Comal Discipline Center, is the district's Secondary Teacher of the Year.
Both teachers advance as the Comal ISD representatives to the Regional Teacher of the Year competition sponsored by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). If either or both are chosen at the regional level they automatically advance to the State Teacher of the Year program.
Slye was selected from a group of 11 elementary campus teachers of the year. She has been teaching for 19 years in the Waco, Robinson, Irving, and Comal ISDs. She has taught kindergarten, second grade, sixth grade, and was an instructional technology specialist, as well as a library media specialist before coming to CISD.
In 1987 she graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Lamar University in Beaumont. She has also taken administration and library science classes at Tarleton State University and the University of North Texas respectively. She's the wife of a pastor and has been a teacher of the year on three campuses in two different school districts.
Grams, the Secondary Teacher of the Year, spent 34 years in the business world, with nearly 10 years as a human resources manager for Wal-Mart, seven years with ARAMCO in Houston and Saudi Arabia, and several years with Pfizer and Toys R Us. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1960s and graduated from Purdue University in 1968 with a bachelor's degree in physical education. In 1972 he earned his MBA from Drake University.
In 2003, he completed and earned his teaching certification at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He was a founding board member of the Comal Public School Foundation and has been involved with the San Antonio Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
