Crime Stoppers unit seeking vandals

by Crystal Gottfried

Comal County Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward to anyone with information that leads to the arrest and indictment of the people who vandalized the New Braunfels Humane Society two weeks ago.

New Braunfels police say vandals broke into the humane society facility on Kuehler Avenue sometime between Saturday night, July 15, and early Sunday morning. They ransacked the facility and killed three animals.

All of the dogs housed at the shelter were taken to the Humane Society of Bexar County in San Antonio located at 4804 Fredericksburg Road while workers were cleaning and making repairs to the New Braunfels facility.

Humane Society Executive Director Cheryl Krueger said that she has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of community support by so many people who say they were upset by how the vandals abused the animals.

Shelter staff are extremely grateful for the “amazing” generosity of volunteers who have spent hours cleaning the shelter, and others who have donated 25,000 pounds of dog food, 6,000-8,000 pounds of kitty litter, and cleaning supplies, as well as thousands of dollars.

Although the dogs will be adopted out of the San Antonio Humane Society, there are still cats and kittens that are available for adoption at the New Braunfels Humane Society which is still open.

According to Crime Stoppers Chairwoman Teresa Nitschke, four donors added to the original reward of $1,000 and others have offered to increase it even more.

Anyone with information regarding the crime can call the 24-hour Crime Stoppers phone at 830-620-3400. Callers will remain anonymous.
