More than 500 guests and participants attended the 13th Annual Sattler VFW Post 8573 Chili Cook-Off last weekend at the post on Sattler Road in Sattler.
The cook-off featured a Chili Appreciation Society International (CASI) sanctioned competition and a non-CASI sanctioned event.
Winners of the CASI event awarded Sunday are Bob Shelton, first place, Pat Dozier, second and Honey Jones, third. Jones, of Canyon Lake won the prestitgious 2003 Terlingua International Chili Championship in Terlingua, Texas.
When she won the championship, Jones beat out 10,000 other cooks from around the nation. Each year, the CASI-sanctioned chili cook-offs raise more than $1,000,000 for local charities.
At the post 8573 chili cook-off, there were 69 cooks competing on Saturday and 41 on Sunday.
"This is the most successful chili cook-off we've ever had," said Ron Pumley, post commander. "We had a piano bar Friday night and it was standing room only."
Proceeds from Post 8573 events such as the chli cook-off benefit the Post Scholarship and Building Fund.
"It really makes me happy when we have success with an event like this, because that means we can do more for the community," Plumley said. "Because of the success of events like the chili cook-off, we will be able to give five $1,000 scholarships this year, not three.
"I'm glad we are able to be veterans who are still serving their community."
