Smithson Valley upsets Madison

The Smithson Valley girls basketball team put together their best game of the season on Tuesday, upsetting Madison (20-9) by a score of 50-47. The Rangers led 18-17 after one quarter, 33-29 at the half, and 39-36 after three quarters. Madison made a run in the fourth quarter and took the lead at 46-44.

Mallory Meyers scored the Rangers last six points, including two clutch free throws with four seconds remaining. Madison could only score one free throw during that stretch and missed a desparation three point shot at the final buzzer.

Mallory Meyers led the way for the Rangers with 24 points,13 rebounds, and four steals. Megan Turk added 11 points and three steals, while Page Piatnik scored 11 points.

The Rangers did not fare as well on Friday at Wagner falling to a tall and talented Thunderbird team, 53-40. SV could not overcome cold shooting and a 31-12 rebound disadvantage. The Rangers defense forced 23 Wagner turnovers and and kept SV close throughout but the Rangers were unable to mount a surge at the end.

Piatnik and Meyers led in scoring with 11 points each. Megan Turk and Michelle Reich added 8 points each. The Rangers play their final home game of the season on Tuesday against Lee.

Parents night ceremonies will take place at 5:30 and tim-off will be at 6:00 pm.
