Memorial Day Weekend, a time when America remembers those who died serving in combat for their country, will become a permanent memorial for a San Antonio family whose husband and father died in a drowning accident at Canyon Lake.

Teenagers discovered the body of Ramiro Bentancourt, 54, at around 4 p.m. on May 30 in the lake. When they found Bentancourt, he was face-down 24 feet under the surface about 200 feet from where he had disappeared.

Bentancourt and his family had gone up to Canyon Lake on Memorial Day weekend for an outing.

According to the Comal County Sheriff's Office, Bentancourt was last seen walking from the Comal Park peninsula to the island when he disappeared May 29 at approximately 5 p.m.

"Between that island and peninsula is a river channel. If you get caught in that, it can be a hazard," said Lt. Mark Reynolds of the Sheriff's office. The lieutenant added that the death has been ruled an accidental drowning and that alcohol was not a factor.

After Bentancourt's disappearance, a number of people-including the San Marcos Dive Team-searched the lake in an effort to uncover his body.

Bentancourt leaves behind a wife, three sons and a daughter.
