Canyon Lake drowning victim was from Ft. Sam On Saturday, August 7, 2004, at approximately 3:50 p.m., emergency units were dispatched to the Ft. Sam Houston Army Recreation Area at Canyon Lake. Forty-three-year-old Michael Hughes, of Indiana, was unconscious, and bystanders were adnimistering CPR upon EMS arrival. Hughes was transported to University Hospital, by Airlife helicopter, where he was pronounced dead. Hughes is active military, attached to the US Army, Ft. Sam Houston, TX. Witnesses, including one immediately with the victim at the time of the incident, state that Hughes had swum to a buoy, but began going under. Attempts to keep the victim afloat went on for several minutes with Hughes then being brought ashore, unconscious. The incident was tentatively ruled an accidental drowning, pending the results of an autopsy. | ||||||||||||||||
