Canyon HS road construction guide Canyon High School students, staff, and parents will have challenges to overcome this new school year because of construction along Interstate 35, both on the frontage road and the interstate. As a result, beginning and veteran drivers are reminded to be patient. Leave home early enough to be in class by 8:30 am, and try not to be in a hurry to leave the campus each day at 3:30 pm. "We are concerned about our young drivers, but we want to remind our parents and staff that they, too, will have to be cautious and patient during this time," says Bob Wiegand, Canyon High principal. Wiegand is strongly recommending that drivers use FM 1101 behind the school to enter, and exit on Cougar Lane which runs through the campus. Drivers will still be able to enter and exit the campus off of the IH-35 frontage road, but that will be a one-lane road for most of the school year. Exits from the high school to the frontage road at 3:30 pm will be controlled for everyone's safey. Canyon High personnel have been working closely with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDoT) and Hunter Industries, the contractor on the IH-35 project. Through this collaboration, TxDoT, during the first two weeks of school, has decided to temporarily close the freeway exit currently in front of Canyon High from 3:00 to 4:30 pm each school day. To allow drivers to get use to the 3:30 traffic on the frontage road, TxDoT is providing two off-duty police officers to direct traffic during the first two weeks of school at the Business 35 intersection. This will allow traffic to move steadily through that intersection (where the stop signs are) after school is out at 3:30 pm. During this same time, TxDoT and Hunter Industries are temporarily moving the interstate exit ramp, currently in front of Canyon High, back (south) about 1,000 feet. That temporary exit ramp will be in service sometime in September, if weather allows construction to continue. Later in the IH-35 construction project, a permanent northbound exit ramp to Canyon High will be opened near Home Depot. A new on-ramp to IH-35 North will be located in front of Canyon High. Even home football games have been addressed during the
constructionphase. Parking will not be allowed on the IH-35 frontage road.
Everyone will be encouraged to park in one of the campus parking lots or
along FM 1101. When necessary, a shuttle from Canyon Middle School may
run to the high school games. More information will be provided closer
to each home game. | ||||||||||||||||
